Can manscaping be a threat to your manhood? New research in Sexually Transmitted Infections suggests shaving your pubic hair may raise your risk of molluscum contagiosum, a viral skin disease that can be sexually transmitted.
Taking a razor to your privates may create microtears that let infection infiltrate; the increased risk may apply to other STIs, such as genital warts due to HPV or herpes, says study author François Desruelles, M.D.
If you need to tame your jungle, trimming is a safer bet than shaving. You can use a pair of scissors, or a simple hair trimmer like the Remington Back & Body Extendable Groomer ($30, amazon.com), which features an extendable handle for hard-to-reach places. Aim to leave about an inch of hair, and apply soothing cream on the area after you’re done to prevent itchiness and irritation.
